Monash Engineering Research Scholarship Opportunities

Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering

Dynamic research scholarship opportunities are available for high achieving engineers and or physicists at the world class research Faculty of Engineering at Monash University (www.eng.monash.edu.au).

The Advanced Computing and Simulation Laboratory is offering an exciting opportunity for a domestic or Australian PR student to carry out postgraduate studies in the field of nonlinear silicon photonics, leading to a PhD.

Silicon Photonics: Controlling Light with Nonlinear Effects in Silicon Nanocrystals

The project aims to design active photonic devices with superior performance based on the strong and ultrafast Kerr nonlinearity of silicon nanocrystals (Si-NCs). With the engineering of these devices, the PhD student will explore and describe the fundamental physics governing their operational behaviour, as well as gain deep insight into the optical properties of Si-NC-waveguides. The successful applicant will also perform fundamental research aiming to suggest, optimize, and demonstrate theoretically novel approaches for controlling light with optical and electrical signals.

The PhD scholarship of $23,728 (in 2012) per annum is available for three years. Applicants should have an excellent academic background in engineering, theoretical/experimental physics, mathematics or computer science, and have a first class honors (or H1 equivalent) degree.

The successful applicant will be part of a dynamic research team and will be solving challenging problems in harnessing the full power of silicon nonlinearities.
